How can you continue living when you’re living a lie? How can you convince your body to stop feeling, your soul to stop caring, and your heart to stop beating?
Haunted by her past, Olivia Adler flees Boston for a beach in Florida, leaving everyone behind, trying to shut the world out. Remaining a relative recluse in her self-imposed prison, she tries to turn everything off, wanting to feel nothing. But a new acquaintance won’t let that happen. After being away from Alexander for a month, his voice constantly ringing in her head, reminding her that her inability to confront her demons will not only destroy her, but also him, can she really be expected to want to feel again when it brings nothing but pain?
Back in Boston, everywhere he turns, Alexander Burnham is reminded of Olivia… His Olivia… He tries to dull the ache left in his heart the only way he knows how… in the bed of a beautiful woman. But Alexander isn’t about to lose his Olivia. After a clue comes to light regarding Olivia’s whereabouts, can he convince her to return to Boston with him? When a force that has laid dormant for months resurfaces, can Alexander still protect her from the unknown danger? And when Alexander comes face to face with a shadow of both his and Olivia’s past, will he be able to tell her the secret that is threatening to tear them apart?
A Tragic Wreck is the continuation of T.K. Leigh’s heart-breakingBeautiful Mess series.
So it’s not often that I can say that I am so emotionally torn finishing this book. I am cranky and angry and I want the next book now. But the reason I am cranky and angry is that this book just gripped me and didn’t let go and now I don’t want to let go either.
Olivia left Boston and possibly the only man she has ever loved. Now hiding out on a small island in Florida, she is determined to stay as far away and under the radar as possible. She had to let go of Alexander. If she hadn’t eventually fate would have taken him from her too. It is true, everything and everyone that she has ever loved has been taken from her. Now sitting in her beach house day after day, she can’t move on. She can’t forget him. He is always there, always in her mind, always in her heart. She can’t move forward when she is still clinging to the past. No one will ever measure up to Alexander. But she had to let him go.
Alexander is stuck, even he and all of his power and money cannot locate her. He needs her. He knows deep down that she needs him, but he has been trying to find her since she left Boston. But to no use. But one day there is a track… he knows she is in Florida. But when he gets to Florida he is taken back to see her out and about and enjoying her time with another man. Wait… that can’t be right… oh but it is…
Each morning while Olivia sits outside enjoying her coffee, the same scene plays out… hot surfer guy parks in front of her house and heads out to the water. Every. Single. Day. When Cam finally gets up the nerve to talk to her, he wants so much to help her out of her funk. He wants to take her sadness away. But when Olivia finally lets her guard down a little bit, she sense him nearby. She can feel him wash over her… she knows Alexander is there. But how can that be?
When Cam convinces her to follow her heart back to Boston, everything changes. Things have changed. But can she finally admit what she wants or is it just too late? Will Alexander forgive her for running? Will they be able to move on? And what about Alexander? Will he finally be able to tell her about the secrets that he is keeping? Will he finally be able to tell her the full truth?
This book just broke my heart time and time again and in between bouts of wiping tears away and smiling at the chances they have been given nothing hurt me more than the ending. I loved this book. It was drama, angst, steam and love (or are we still not admitting that it is love?). I love these characters, and though I may not relate to them, I feel for them. They captured my heart and I just want to know that in the end, they will both get everything they have always wanted and more.
This is a great follow-up to A Beautiful Mess and I cannot wait for the next book!
“Libby, wait!” Cam cried, running down the stairs and into the kitchen. He watched as Olivia opened a semi-full bottle of whiskey and drank straight from it. “What are you doing?”
She took a breath before throwing the bottle back, drinking more. “What does it look like?! This is the only thing that takes those fucking dreams away, Cam!” she cried out, her hands shaking. “How the fuck would you feel if, every night, you watch your parents die?! EVERY! FUCKING! NIGHT!” Her cries became more and more desperate with each breath. “And then you see the person who saved you and you don’t know who the fuck it is, but you know that you should! I don’t know how much longer I can do this,” she moaned, sinking down to the kitchen floor, clutching the bottle in her hand as if her life depended on it.
Cam lowered himself to the ground and sat next to her. He leaned against the cabinets and watched with sympathy as she threw back the bottle once more, taking another long drag. He said quietly, “You know, there are pills that you can try if you don’t want those dreams anymore.”
She shook her head vehemently, her sobs heavy. “No. I’m not going to use chemicals. My doctor already gave me valium, which I refuse to take, to help with the panic attacks.”
He raised his eyebrows. “So, then, what’s the deal with that whiskey bottle you’re holding?”
“Fuck you,” she spat out, glaring at him.
Cam sighed, placing his arm around her shoulders, trying to comfort her. “Sorry, Libby. I just hate to see you upset. Tell me what I can do and I’ll do it.”
Olivia took another swig of the bottle. “Nothing, Cam. There is nothing you can do. There is nothing anyone can do. This is my fucking life. I destroy people so you should stay far away from me because I’ll just destroy you, too.” She stood up and threw the now empty whiskey bottle into the garbage before walking over to the window, staring out into the dark ocean. She noticed a black SUV parked a few hundred yards down the sandy road. Her heart fell as she stumbled over to the couch, falling flat on her stomach. She was emotionally drained. She wanted to shut it all off. Why did he have to come to her island and find her?
“Easy, Libby.” Cam scurried off the kitchen floor and into the living room, kneeling down next to the couch.
“I’m broken, Cam,” Olivia slurred, turning her head to look at him. “I’m broken and he keeps popping up. I can’t make it fucking stop.”
