Years after suffering the tragic loss of her husband, Ethan, which left her alone to raise their young daughter, Clare Murray still holds the last letter he wrote with the words “When You’re Ready” written in his familiar messy handwriting, unable to break its weathered seal. Ready for what? He was her entire world, and Clare had accepted a life without him, without love. Until years later, fate brings her to an emergency room, and face to face with a stormy-eyed doctor intent on changing her mind.
Son of a billionaire, Logan Matthews has spent his life trying to make his absentee father proud. Without a family to depend on, all he’s ever wanted is a place to call home. After a failed marriage, Logan believes he’s unworthy of love…until he meets a woman who awakens his spirit and transforms his entire life in an instant.
But how far are Clare and Logan willing to go for love? Can his love mend the pieces of her grieving heart?
When their love is tested, is Clare ready to put her whole heart on the line again? Can Logan learn the true meaning of love, even if it means sacrificing his own happiness? When a second chance at love is given, Clare and Logan learn you are never truly ready until you’re ready to risk it all.
So most people have images of their characters in their heads, actors, singers, cowboys… you know who you want in the leading role when the book is finally made into a movie. Well, that has never happened to me. Yes, people in certain roles eventually make sense to me, but they jump right into my brain as I am reading the books, until now. I immediately knew who was going to be Logan and who was going to be Clare. So then I got to thinking, how did this book do that to me when no others had? I still have no idea but the personalities of the characters just made sense to me. I understood them from beginning to end. I felt what they were feeling, I laughed when they were laughing and I wanted to spout off with my own sass right along with them.
This book was fun, flirty, sexy and full of love. I just adored the entire book from beginning to end. Well… maybe not the beginning because honestly the thought of smelling vomit kind of kicks up my own gag reflexes and I wasn’t sure how much more puke I could read about. But it added a new dimension to it. If Clare hadn’t been in the hospital that day covered in her daughters vomit there would be no point in the rest of the story.
Clare lost the love of her life but he left her with more than a broken heart, he left her with a beautiful daughter, Maddie, who she treasured so very much. But when one accident at home takes this dynamic duo to the ER to make sure Maddie was ok, that is when it all really begins. The doctor… the amazingly hot, available playboy of a doctor walks in to check on little Maddie. But something happens when Dr. Matthews steps into the room. Maddie clings to him. He makes her feel safe.
But so much more happened that day in the ER. There was something about Dr. Matthews and he indeed thought there was something about Clare. But funny thing about that is that neither of them expected anything out of a visit to the ER than concern for little Maddie. But there was something there. Something that neither was expecting.
Clare lost the love of her life. Logan Matthews was looking for the love of his. Neither of them had the easy path to each other, and though it was sad on both sides and they both ended up with the feeling of loss and regret, they were still drawn to one another. But could Clare open her heart and learn to love again and could Logan dare to believe he was worth the love?
This book was real and raw and gripping. I was consumed with these characters. They were people I could picture in my head and the connection they had to each other was just off the charts hot. It was amazing! Neither of them was perfect, but they wanted to try. They wanted to see if they felt exactly what Maddie did, safe. I was touched by the strength in Clare’s character and I was moved by the love in Logan. I was touched by the sweet innocence of Maddie. I was drawn to these characters and completely consumed by their story.
Learning to love again and learning to love for the first time are some of the hardest things people go through and just when you think Clare and Logan are going to have a happily ever after… everything changes. It makes something so sweet and perfect and gives it a whole new dynamic. But through it all, I clung to the hope of everlasting love. I adored the characters in this book, I adored their situations and I adored their unique ability to just completely consume me.
J.L. Berg has written a truly captivating book filled with steam and sass and I want more of these characters. Not just Clare, Logan and Maddie, but the secondary characters. The touching moments and the moments of fun and humor. This book has something special and I want more of it! I cannot wait to dive into Never Been Ready, the second book in the Ready series!
