Life throws you curve balls, but no parent should ever bury a child. Determined not to make the same mistakes with his son as he made with his daughter, Nic Beuve is single-minded until Hope walks into his life.
Hope Delaney, a woman with a past that almost broke her, tries to keep people at bay for their own protection. Fortunately for her, no one listens when she says she wants to be alone.
Burning desire, a deep need to protect, and a woman who looks like an angel breaks down Nic’s defenses until he can’t ignore them. He wants Hope and what Nic wants…
Hope thinks she can walk away at any time she just wasn’t counting on a man like Nic to get in the way, or a nosy but loving Cajun Boss. All’s fair in love and war and what Maman Rose wants is Nic and Hope together. Will their relationship survive an ex-wife with an agenda or will her past come between them… or kill them?
This book is a crazy tangled web set in the heart of Cajun country where river rats, creole and jazz rein supreme. But what it wasn’t was a typical read. It was high in drama, high in angst and high in fear and then there was Nic and Hope…
Hope is on the run. She knows she can never stay in the same place for very long without her past catching up to her. She knows she will be on the run until they catch him. Because she knows there is nothing he wants more than her to be out of the picture. I don’t just mean out of the city, state or country, I mean he won’t be happy until she is GONE. So that is why we find Hope in New Orleans. She knows she can stay there for a little while, make a little bit of money and be gone to the next place before anyone finds her, before she gets too close to anyone, before anyone finds out her story. But she walked into the wrong restaurant for that.
Taking a job in a restaurant where she knows nothing about the cuisine will be difficult, but she knows she is not going to be there forever and it will give her a bit of time to save some money before moving on. What she certainly doesn’t expect is a boss like Maman Rose. That woman has the biggest heart and a sixth sense.
Maman Rose knows that Hope is on the run. She may not know why or from who, but she knows. But she also knows that Hope has a heart that was beaten down pretty bad and just needs to find a home. Some place where she can rest her head at night and not in fear. Where she can look up and see a future instead of constantly looking down into the depths of fear. She knows that Hope has lived in too much fear and she knows there is someone else who has lost his way in his own grief that he will never give his heart so openly.
Nic has the ideal job, an amazing son and a decent enough life. But he is wracked with guilt. Never in a million years did he ever think he would be able to see beyond the grief that plagues him to find happiness that he should have in his life.
When their worlds collide, there is only one thing left for Hope to do. Never get too close… she has to leave and now that Nic knows everything, she has to go to protect him. To protect those she loves. But when the fear of her past is too much, it’s the fear of the future that ultimately may slow them down, set them back, get them killed.
This book was a crazy emotional rollercoaster of a ride. But one you just can’t help but get on. Once you get on the ride, please remain seated and hold on. It is crazy! The struggle of what is and what can be are so overshadowed in this book by the lingering fear of the past. It makes your heart hurt for both Hope and Nic but it is a great reminder that with hope all things are possible.
I was left in awe by Nic’s protective nature of Hope. It was like they were the perfect fit right from the beginning, but the odds and the people from their pasts were certainly against them from the beginning. If it wasn’t her tortured past, it was his that tormented them. I was enthralled by this book and captivated by the words and struggles that these two had to over come. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time.
A great read if you are looking for an action filled kind of romance that just never ends. The storyline and plot will leave you all sorts of tangled, but the love behind the actions of both Nic and Hope will leave you will a full heart.
Oh, and I would be remised if I didn’t mention that I married into a family full of folks from Stillwater, Oklahoma… so Sooner or later I would have to say, “Go Pokes!” You will understand when you read the book!
