The Outsider Chronicles, #1
New Adult/Adult Contemporary
Released August 12, 2014
Knox Jagger. The name inspires resent in every male at Sinclair University, want in every female, and contempt in Charlie Chase.
Charlie can be summed up in three words: independent, independent, and independent. To Charlie, Knox epitomizes everything that’s wrong with college males: prolific one-night stands, drunken senseless fights, and a body that hints at prioritizing gym time over study time.
As an up-and-coming writer for Sinclair University’s newspaper, Charlie’s tasked with getting to the bottom of who’s been dropping little white pills into girls’ drinks at parties. In an ocean of All-American boys sporting polo shirts and innocent smiles, Knox is the obvious suspect. As evidence piles up against the bad boy of Sinclair, Charlie becomes more and more certain it isn’t Knox. But when her drink is dosed at a party and she wakes up on Knox’s couch the next morning, Charlie’s left with more questions than answers when it comes to Knox Jagger.
How can Charlie ever hope to uncover the truth behind a guy so closed off he’s become . . .
I have read most of Nicole Williams books in my time as a blogger, but I have to tell you, this one by far is my favorite one to date! I fell in love with Knox and in the beginning I really wasn’t sure why. He was the guy that everyone warned you about. He was the one that was going to be trouble. But there was something about Knox that just captured me from the beginning.
Before I get too far into my overwhelming love for Knox, I have to tell you Charlie is one of my most favorite female characters of all time. She deflects like no other and she is so sharp and quick witted. I think I loved her so much because she is exactly the same personality as I am and when she finishes her education, we will have similar degrees. I love her sense of humor and her quick comebacks. She is sassy but with a smart twist. She is not desperate or needy. She is not whiney or co-dependent. She is awesome.
Charlie is working towards her degree in Journalism from Sinclair University. She is also a writer for the school paper and there is one story that she just wants to blow out of the water and expose. That is the effects of underage drinking and what it does to a person. So she sets out on a mission to attend a college party so she can get her story. But suddenly her story becomes a sidebar when she is approached by Knox. The separate and she is back to finding her story. But when she witnesses two upperclassmen slipping something into the drinks of a couple of freshmen, her world is going to begin to spin out of control. More so, when she discovers that her drink was also slipped something. But she didn’t take the drink from anyone and she never let it out of her hand.
Once she becomes disoriented and unable to make a sound or move, everything becomes a much bigger story. But this time, she is the main character. But when she is left without a functioning body, he is there. He is there to pick her up and protect her, or is he? Suddenly her mission is no longer worrying about how much alcohol is consumed at these parties, but who would slip something into her drink and why does the campus bad boy who can get any woman he wants care?
Knox is the bad boy on campus and his pockets are constantly being stuffed with numbers at every party he attends, but he doesn’t do relationships and he definitely has an anger issue. But no one really knows a lot about him. What they don’t know, that smart journalism major really wants to find out. There is always more to a story and we all know that, but what Charlie discovers leads her life in a direction she doesn’t know how to deal with.
I love the banter between the characters, I love the fierce loyalty to one another and I love that Charlie has enough self worth and self confidence to stand her own ground. This book left you question everyone and everything you thought you knew about what is in that red Solo cup at every party. It makes you really appreciate the social message behind the story as well.
Nicole Williams takes these characters on an journey to not only find out what happened to Charlie, but to find out what was hidden in Knox’s past. It is a unique journey through the lives of these two characters, but it is just a great journey through college life. I really appreciated the banter between the characters. There is such a great spark of genius in the way they communicate and it is touching once Knox lets his guard down.
This is a five star must read and I am so excited for more from this new collection by Nicole Williams! Well written, well told and you just can’t help but fall for this bad boy with such good intentions!
