The Boyfriend Bookmark: ★★★★
An infamous love, destined nevermore,
For death could not claim, the enchanting Lenore.
Cursed by the malevolent spirit of the Headless Horseman, Ireland Crane ventures to Manhattan in search of a way to break her soul crushing bond. Instead, she discovers the lines between fact and fiction are blurring once more. Croaking ravens. Telltale hearts. Could the works of Poe be coming to pass with handsome Wall Street Midas Ridley Peolte as their unwilling target?
She walks the Earth, a plague on mankind,
searching for he, her rotted heart doth pine.
Together, the two unknowingly release a dark force death itself could not tame. Surrounded by the unrelenting violence and mayhem they’ve unleashed, Ireland feels her control over the Horseman slipping. Before the beast within consumes her, she and her crew must follow the clues of the dead to right a centuries’ old wrong. Will it be enough to sate the Horseman’s appetite?
Hell hath no fury like a ghoul scorned.
Sometimes when we venture outside of our own literary comfort zone, we find the unexpected, that we actually can enjoy a book that we are not used to. This is one of those books for me. A twisted telling of literature of the past and a present day predicament. This book is not for the weak of heart, the faint of souls or those who are not adventurous in their reading. If you stick to straight romance, this may not be the book for you. It is a dark and twisted tale bringing in the classic literature that used to scare the crap out of me when I was younger.
This book was twisted, dark, creepy, funny and witty all wrapped into one nice little bundle of nerves. I was actually a little tongue tied when I finished reading this as I wasn’t even sure how to find the words to describe it. Classic tales interwoven with a modern day twist, curses to be solved and people not to be messed with.
There are so many unique qualities to this book that just kept me from putting it down. I love the classic tales of Poe woven through it and it really made me not only want to visit some of those again, but it made me want to read a little further into this series.
The wit and banter in this book was something that just left me in awe. It was so dark, but still had all of those little things that make it a must read, do not put me down kind of book.
Stacey Rourke has a very unique style of writing and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really like the way she bled the stories together. From The Headless Horseman to Edgar Allen Poe, it is quite a feat and Rourke does it flawlessly.
I will admit, because I read the first two books in this series out of order, I was a bit confused in the beginning. But after going back and reading Crane, the entire picture seemed a lot more clear. I wish I would have started with the books in order but it didn’t change the outcome. I still really enjoyed the writing and the wit behind this dark tale. It is definitely a unique perspective that I haven’t read a lot into, but I know with the twist at the end, I will be seeking out the third book in the series!
