His world is full of despair. Until he finds her light…

Robbie Hayes’s life changed the day a horrific accident shook his foundation. He’s resolved to regain control. While the physical wounds have healed, the emotional scars remain.

Ember Walker’s life hasn’t been easy. Fleeing from a world filled with hatred gives her a fresh start, one she desperately craved. Now, she’s stronger, but guilt and insecurities still plague her.
Will she ever be able to outrun her memories? Can he be her salvation?
My eyes flutter as soft fingertips drag across my lower back. The faint sound of thumping pounds against my ear as I open my eyes, feeling disoriented. The first thing I see are the hard lines of Robbie’s stomach as his chest rises and falls.
My face buries into the warmth of his embrace and he starts chuckling.
“Is it possible to wake you?” he rumbles.
“Guess so, but I was having the most wonderful dreams.”
“So was I, but mine weren’t while sleeping. Mine are right here in the flesh, laid out on top of me.
When I lift my head to his, my heart melts. The look of devotion on his face is so strong it threatens to crush me.
“How long have I been asleep?”
“About an hour. When I came out of the bathroom, you were passed out.”
“Why aren’t you asleep?”
“Because I have an incredibly sexy, naked woman lying in my arms. It would be a shame to miss this.”
“I’ve slept with you naked before.” Blush creeps up my cheeks.
“Think we both know this is different.”
Emotions bubble inside of me, and I curl into him.
“You mean something special to me, Ember. More than special. I want you to know that.”
So it’s no secret that I have loved each and every book written by Ahren Sanders. She is one of my go-to authors that I will read endlessly. But… this book… Far exceeded any possible expectations I could have ever had regarding her work. I have loved each book, I have loved each character. But Robbie and Ember… well… my heart was stolen by these two and I am not quite ready to let them go yet.
At one point in the book, I sent this author a message telling her that she made me ugly cry. But it wasn’t worth every tear and every emotion that this book brought to the surface. And I will be perfectly honest with you, anytime you have a man in the military my heart just beats a little bit louder and a whole lot faster. But then you make him one that would give anything to love and protect one woman at all costs and I was done for, well for a little while anyway…
Robbie Hayes, a Marine with a dark past. His time in the military clouded his world. Made things unbearable. He lost sleep when he returned and was haunted of memories of his final day in combat. Robbie Hayes, the strong, tormented and broken man… But there is one thing he sees that seems to take away some of that pain, to make it a bit more bearable. But he can’t go there. The scars on the inside are too much to burden for someone else.
Ember Walker is not perfect. But she is lovable, she just doesn’t realize it. She has been handed so much in her life that coping is just the only thing she knows how to do. But giving her heart away is not something that is going to be easy. She knows the pain that it can cause, she has lived it first hand. But there is something about Robbie Hayes that just fits. The heartache from her past is a lot to deal with. Learning to let someone in her heart again…that may take even more bravery than most will ever know.
Both have scars from their past that they are trying to get beyond. Can they find room to accept the past, move on from the past and find the happiness that they deserve? Love fearlessly by those they are surrounded by may be the one thing that will get them both beyond the hurt they have experienced.
I loved these characters tremendously. Robbie has pain from his time in the military and the war he now fights is within. Suffering from PTSD and finding a way to see through to the other side is his battle. Ember suffered years of abuse from her mother and sister and learning to trust another man in her life is asking a lot. No matter how perfect these two are for one another, finding the strength to move beyond the past is going to be their biggest obstacle.
Ahren Sanders told Robbie’s story and it broke me. Completely broke me… yes, I ugly cried for the third or forth time ever over characters in a book. There were really tough and tragic moments in this book, but the sum of all the pain and tears was the love waiting on the other side. This is a powerful book. Being the patriotic soul that I am, my heart just broke time and time again for Robbie. The constant stress from PTSD is a hard concept to grasp for many that don’t live through it. No matter what these two have to struggle to overcome, the battles within are the enemy.
I am always enamored and in awe of Ahren’s work, but there is something so moving for me about a war hero that melts me. My mind was flooded with admiration for this book and for Robbie. Salvation may not have been the story I was waiting for, but sometimes the best gifts are unexpected. Ahren Sanders knocked me off my feet with this one and it instantly moved to one of my top five reads of all time.
Note To Ahren Sanders: YOU ARE AMAZING!
